Congratulations to The Survival Mom!
A few months ago I was contacted by Jessica Bennett, a reporter from Newsweek, to help her with her article about preppers. One of the things she was looking for was a "suburban prepper" who she could do a one on one interview with, someone who could really explain what a main stream prepper is like. Well, the first person who came to my mind was Lisa from The Survival Mom, and one of our very own bloggers right here on APN, and boy was that a good call! I think Lisa did an outstanding job with the interview! Let's all give her a big congratulations and a thanks for representing preppers in a good light. You can watch the video and read the complete article here: http://www.newsweek.com/id/228428/page/1
I also would like to give Jessica Bennett a very big thank you for allowing preppers the opportunity to be interviewd and recieve a fair and balanced report. I'd be more than happy to work with her again in the future.
As with any major media coverage, one expects the other side to be represented as well. I have no problem with that especially when we got someone as awesome as The Survival Mom representing our side. From the article Jessica quotes Art Markman, a cognitive psychologist at the University of Texas as saying; "Between the media and the Internet, many people have built up a sense that there's this calamity out there that needs to be avoided," Well, no offense to ole Art, but when you got a nice secure cushy job with tenure it's hard to imagine life without food. Just wait till you have a calamity sir, then you'll think twice about what should be "avoided". While I don't wish ill will upon anyone, everyone, eventually experiences a "calamity" of one sort or another, and As Jessica stated at the end of her article: "As for the rest of us, isn't it a little bit crazy not to prepare?"
Anyway, again, lets all thank and congratulate Lisa for the awesome job in the interview, and give a big thanks to Jessica for allowing us the opportunity to give our story.

That is VERY exciting! I can't wait to read the article! Woo-Hoo!
I sent the link to the Newsweek article out to our non-believing children. Hopefully, it will strike a chord within them. Out of five grown children, only one listens and prepares.

Great article - nice link to this website - first time I've been here. I've been becoming a prepper (as opposed to a preppie, which I've been for 30 years now!) over the last 6 months. Two 6 ft. shelves in our basement now of dry/canned goods/water/charcoal/basic medical supplies. However, we don't own a gun or have our own generator yet - and somehow can NEVER find a flashlight when we need one! If nothing else, it's nice to just be able to send the kids down for something when I'm making dinner and need an extra can of tomatoes. My brother/mother are preppers too!
Thanks Gen, It is exciting!
IdahoBob: I'm sure they'll come around, the tougher things get the more people wake up. Better late than never.
Deethorn: Thanks for stopping in. Great job getting started! Newcomers are always welcome here. Preppie to Prepper is the first big step. Every little bit counts.
Thanks to YOU, Tom, for thinking of me. I admit that I was nervous talking with Jessica, the writer, but she was more than fair and open to what I had to say. When we went to the shooting range, she came with us and shot a gun for the first time in her life. That was a memorable evening for us. :o)
The Survival Mom did a great job!
The article was very good.
Woohoo! How wonderful! I enjoyed the article and the positive way prepping was presented. We must get people thinking about how to live and prep.

I just read the Newsweek article on msnbc.com and immediately forwarded it to my kids and several friends. How amazing to know that what I've been doing has a name! Learning some of the simple herbal healing techniques maybe important, too - especially those herb I can grow right here. Wonderful article *
Wow, I'm NOT crazy! Someone posted the article on Seattle Craigslist. I read through it and felt better about how I've been feeling.
This last year I started purchasing a few, inexpensive things, like a tent, sleeping bag, hatchet, binoculars, hand-cranked radio... Okay, I'm a city girl; I figured I'd eventually need these things (and much more).
But to have my thoughts and feelings about where this country/world is going spelled out so eloquently made me feel better.
I'm very glad Survival Mom was the main interviewee, as she seems to represent the normal people (foot in mouth here, I'm not saying you're all not normal); not the militia groups we all read about.
Anyway, it led me to your site and I'm very thankful to have found it. It looks like I have a LOT of learning to do regarding preppers. Can anyone give me guidance on where to start?
Tom,
Great Post!
Lisa, I have been reading your blog and leaving on the screen for my wife to absorb. You did a great job in the interview!! You are always so pleasant with your replies to everyone on your blog as well!
There are are so many good resources on the innertubes.......APN, The Survival Mom, Survival Blog, The Survivalist Blog.....all with unique viewpoints. We are blessed to have such strong and valuable viewpoints!

I thought the Survival Mom did a great job. I can't say that enough. However I was disturbed by your quote that preparedness was a "reaction as opposed to a movement." Every step of preparedness that I have taken has been rooted in obedience. All could be completely well with the world and I would still prepare as I have because I proactively--not reactively--read and study the scriptures. They are very, very clear that we need to be prepared. Wall Street, Fannie Mae, my local bank or grocery store doen't dictate my preparedness efforts. The undeniable and undisputed word of the Lord tells me to get prepared.
Preparedness Pro, you are 100% right, when you are talking about people like yourself, myself, and those of us who do prepare and have been preparing for a long time for those very reasons. While I certainly don't believe that I was taken out of context, there was more to the discussion that wasn't printed. We were talking about the growing number of newbies who are just now getting into preparedness and latching on to this new term "prepper" These are the people who for the longest time have not even considered getting prepared, but now all of a sudden are. I was asked if I thought it was a movement, well a movement is something that you "make" happen. These newcomers aren't doing this to be pro-active either or they would have seen the signs a long time ago, they are reacting to the current economic collapse and the increased disasters. These are newcomers that will soon outnumber us in the world of preparedness and it is up to those of us who have been preparing much longer to help them along and share all that we know. Thanks for stopping in, you are right, I don't need the collapse to tell me to prepare either.
That was awesome! Thanks SurvivalMom! Thanks Tom!The more people that become aware hopefully the better prepared everyone will be.
nice post. thanks.
